The Lincoln Mark LT was an unmitigated failure in the US market, but in Mexico it’s been the marque’s top-seller, with 6,000 units leaving dealers since 2005. So while the gussied-up F-150 was unceremoniously euthanized in the US, Ford’s luxury brand had to whip up something with a star badge, a split grille and a work-over with el feo palo for our southern compadres.

The 2010 Lincoln Mark LT looks a lot like the Ford F-150 Platinum fitted with a new grille (Ford didn’t even change the headlights) and some Lincoln badging, because essentially, that’s what it is. The new LT shares all the mechanicals with Ford’s top-selling pickup, including its 310 hp 5.4-liter V8 powerplant, a choice of 5.5- or 6.5-foot beds and a tow rating of 10,000 lbs.

We’re guessing there won’t be many American pickup truck buyers disappointed that the 2010 Lincoln Mark LT won’t be available in the US market. FoMoCo is all about going global and going small – the same applies for its luxury brand Lincoln. With the Navigator selling poorly, Lincoln is now considering vehicles as small as the Ford Focus and a compact crossover due out in 2011. The two would be the smallest Lincoln models in the brands current lineup and unless a coupe based on the Ford Mustang materializes, Lincoln will walk away from the rear-wheel-drive segment when the Town Car dies in 2011.

As of right now, most of Lincoln’s development team is focused on a compact car based on the next-generation global Ford Focus platform. While product chief Derrick Kuzak says that Lincoln has room in its lineup for a front-wheel-drive compact car, such a car is far from being green-lighted by executives, reports Automotive News.

Lincoln unveiled the Concept C at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show with a 1.6L EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine under the hood. It was the first time we’ve seen anything official from Ford regarding a 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine.

After showing us the MKT concept here last year, the production version is a more realistic interpretation of the 7-passenger CUV. While it resembles everything from a GM Lambda to an Audi Q7 in profile, the nose and tail are all Lincoln. It’s a tasteful vehicle that looks classy and upscale, as it should for Ford’s premium brand. Unfortunately, it’s being launched at a time when this class of vehicle seems in remission.

Built on the same D4 platform that underpins the Ford Flex, this new suit of clothes suits the Lincoln well. The interior, in particular, is rather handsome with excellent materials and fit and finish that was exemplary for a show car. Good quality leather, wood used sparingly but effectively and elegant satin-finish metal accents abound. The seats are comfy and the cargo hold looks like they’ve made good use of that extra length compared to the Flex. The MKT will also feature Ford’s twin-turbocharged, direct-inject EcoBoost 3.5L V6 as an option, giving it the best horsepower (355) and fuel economy in its class. The standard engine will be a 3.7-liter V6 with 268 hp and 267 lb.-ft. of torque. That should keep it in the hunt with the Acura MDX and Audi Q7, which Lincoln have tabbed as the MKT’s major competition.

The Lincoln MKS follows the release of the Flex CUV and the flagship MKT as the third vehicle to get the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 on the 2010 model year.

Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the twin-turbo engine is rated at 355 bhp and 350 lb-ft torque, all while providing 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. Those who opt for the EcoBoost will also get a host of other options including 19-inch wheels, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, all-wheel-drive, push-button start, ambient lighting, HID headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and a rear window power sunshade.
