BMW has been hard at work with their sustainable living projects, which have ultimately spawned the i3 city car and the new i8 concept. And to keep up with its exposure, BMW has just unveiled the i8 Concept in North America today at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Power for the BMW i8 Concept comes from a modified electric-motor found in the i3. It drives the front axle while a 1.5 liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine making 220-hp and 221 lb-ft of torque moves the rear axle. Working together, the system makes 349-hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a twin-speed transmission, the BMW i8 runs from 0 to 62 mph in less than 5 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

On a full charge of its lithium-ion battery, the BMW i8 can go 20 miles in full electric mode. While no total range has been provided, rumors say that the i8 is capable of going more than 400 miles on a full tank of gas and full charge. Estimated fuel-economy for the BMW i8 Concept comes in at 78 mpg.

Key Competitors: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL, Audi e-tron.

Power: 3-cylinder 3.0l, 220 hp (rear wheels), electric motor 129 hp (front wheels).

Toyota is teasing a bunch of its Tokyo Motor Show debuts today and one of the many vehicles to debut in Japan next month will be the Toyota Aqua, which will eventually come to the United States as the Toyota Prius C.

Toyota says that the Aqua “combines the features of a compact car with a hybrid vehicle to create a car that represents the future of compact vehicles with a groundbreaking fuel efficiency of approximately 35 km/L (under the JC08 test cycle; 40 km/L under the 10-15 test cycle).” After going through a bunch translation that means the Prius C will average somewhere in the area of 50 mpg when its comes to the United States.

Power for the Toyota Aqua/Prius C comes from a lightweight hybrid system mated to a 1.5-liter engine with a high-output motor.

The Toyota Aqua will go on sale in Japan in late Dec. 2011, and will go on sale in the United States sometime next year.

Joining the new 2013 Ford Mustang lineup is the new Boss 302. The 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 gets the same design upgrades as the base models with a sportier appeal with a body kit. It is features a reflective hockey stick graphics package – first modern application on a production car – paying homage to the 1970 Boss 302. Also new for 2013 is heritage-inspired School Bus Yellow paint and Sterling Gray accents on Boss Laguna Seca.

“Everything we did for 2013 is consistent with and links directly back to our 1970 heritage. The reflective stripes and hockey stick graphic in particular mean something to Mustang enthusiasts,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer. “Last year, we proved the car had what it takes to perform, and this year we focused on enhancing its eye-catching looks and celebrating its history.”

Also for 2013, the Ford SYNC system becomes standard for the Boss 302.

Power for the 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 has been upgraded to 444-hp with a maximum torque of 380 lb-ft of torque. A race-inspired clutch with upgraded friction materials transmits power, with a short-throw, close-ratio six-speed manual.

Ford has just taken the covers off of the new 2013 Ford Mustang, which now receives a new design with a more in-your-face grille, new hood and new signature LED headlamps and tail lamps.

“The new Mustang is the perfect example of continuing to build on excellence. It takes the greatness of the 5.0-liter and V6 and pushes the refinement to the next level,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer. “The car has been spot-on functionally and now we’re adding more features and technology to further improve the driver’s experience.”

Design wise, the new 2013 Ford Mustang gets a bunch of changes that you may not notice at a first glance. On the list of changes are:

Functional heat extractors on the hood of the GT that help move hot air out of the engine compartment and cool the engine.

Rocker panels running along the car are now body-color.

The rear has been updated with a high-gloss black panel that connects the tail lamps.

Standard high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps on both V6 and GT models.

A revamped wheels lineup with standard 17-inch wheels for V6 all the way up to 19-inch optional wheels on the GT and V6 Performance Package. Two different finishes on the 17-inch wheel – machined-aluminum and painted. Three optional V6 wheels – an 18-inch polished aluminum set, an updated 18-inch painted aluminum and a 19-inch painted wheel design and a new theme for the V6 Performance Package. Standard 18-inch painted aluminum wheel on both GT and premium GT. 19-inch optional GT wheel with a gloss-black finish.

New colors – Deep Impact Blue and Gotta Have It Green (really?).

V6 and GT  get optional leather-trimmed or cloth Recaro seats that are available on the Shelby GT500 and Boss 302.

Inside you get an optional Ford Track Apps, which delivers performance metrics through a 4.2-inch LCD. The system measures g forces, acceleration times in quarter-mile and 0-60 increments, and displays braking times complete with automatic and countdown starts.

The 2013 Ford Mustang GT’s 5.0 liter engine will now develop 420-hp – up from 412-hp. Those that select an automatic-equipped Mustang (don’t know why you would) will be able to shift own gears with new SelectShift Automatic transmission, which is now standard.

The 2013 Ford Mustang GT also gets the new GT Track Package, which is only available on the manual GT Mustangs with a 3.73 axle. It gives buyers an engine cooler, upgraded radiator, performance friction brake pads and the same Torsen differential that’s on Mustang Boss 302. The package also adds the current Brembo Brake Package, with 14-inch vented front discs, 19-inch alloy wheels and summer performance tires.

What else? The V6 Performance Package is now available for automatic models for the first time.

The 2013 Ford Mustang will be built at AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Mich. and will go on sale early next year.

Over the weekend, FoMoCo launched a new Facebook campaign for the 2013 Ford Mustang prior to its debut at the 2011 LA Auto Show later this week. The campaign consisted of Mustang fans sharing the ‘Ford Mustang’ badge on Facebook. Every time 5,000 fans shared the badge Ford would reveal a teaser images of the 2013 Mustang.

Well, it seems like the Internet couldn’t wait for Ford to release the teasers and now all images have been leaked.

“It looks like the passion our Ford Mustang fans have for 2013 has lead to an early reveal of all four Mustang images,” Ford said in a Facebook status update. “But we’re not done yet! Come back on 11/15/2011 for the FULL reveal of our entire 2013 Mustang lineup!”

The Nissan NV truck is offered in three well-equipped models including NV1500, NV2500 HD, NV3500 HD. All are available with either a 4.0-liter V6 or 5.6-liter V8.

Nissan’s NV vans, the company’s first entry into the commercial vehicle segment in North America, will be taken a step further at the 2011 LA Auto Show. The company has teamed up with The Grilled Cheese Truck and Coolhaus Truck  to combine their takes on two food classics with a pair of custom-outfitted Nissan NV vans.

The two vans will be put to work on the streets of LA and inside the  Convention Center’s West Hall where they will be providing sandwiches (cheese and ice cream respectively) to media attending the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The Nissan NV food truck concepts come with custom fold-out serving windows, work counters and full exterior graphics.

“Since its introduction last spring, the Nissan NV van is proving itself in a wide range of commercial uses, from construction to delivery services, in both Standard Roof and High Roof body styles,” said Joe Castelli, vice president, Commercial Vehicles and Fleet, Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA). “The Nissan NV High Roof model is especially adaptable for food truck and catering use thanks to its 76.9-inch tall interior, which provides the flexibility for the mobile chefs to comfortably move around inside while creating their gastronomical delights.”

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG will be making its public debut later this week at the 2011 LA Auto Show but the Stuttgart automaker has just released all the images and details of the new SUV.

“Like its predecessors, the 2012 ML63 AMG sets new standards in terms of performance, exclusivity and an outstanding driving experience – plus the efficiency factor, which is acquiring ever greater emphasis at Mercedes-AMG,” said Ola Kallenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “As the inventor of the high-performance SUV, we remain true to the philosophy which we introduced in 1999 with the 2000MY ML55 AMG and continued with the 2007MY ML63 AMG.”

So let’s get right down to the fun stuff. Power for the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG comes from a 5.5 liter V8 biturbo engine making 518-hp at 5,250 rpm with a maximum torque of 516 lb-ft between 1,750 – 5,000 rpm. That allows 0 to 60 mph to come in 4.7 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. Buyers can add the AMG Performance Package, which increases output to 550-hp at 5,750 rpm and 560 lb-ft between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm. The package allows a 0 to 60 mph of 4.6 seconds with a top speed of 174 mph. The AMG Performance Package also adds an engine cover genuine carbon fiber, calipers painted in red and the AMG Performance steering wheel in Premium leather/DINAMICA.

The engine is mated to a AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission with engine deactivation through one of the three driving programs. In ‘Controlled Efficiency mode (C) the ECO stop/start function activates and shuts down the big V8 when the vehicle is at a stand still. Other driver programs include Sport (S) and Manual (M).

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, which is 99 pounds lighter than its predecessor, also gets something called the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilization. The system is standard and features active stabilizers on the front and rear axles to make-up for body roll during rough cornering.

On the inside, the new ML63 AMG comes standard with basically everything including AMG exclusive illuminated door sills, AMG sports pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs, COMAND system with hard-drive navigation & SIRIUS real-time traffic & weather, 10-way power front seats w/door-mounted controls plus driver and passenger memory with 4-way lumbar support, Harman/Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system, HD radio, Bluetooth audio streaming, 7 inch display with central COMAND controller, 4.5″ color instrument cluster display, power lift gate, power sunroof and heated & active ventilated front seats

The 2012 Mercedes ML63 AMG will hit U.S. showrooms in the first quarter of 2012.

The problem with most voice-recognition systems in modern cars is the stilted, unnatural commands required to execute even the simplest functions. Cadillac is supposedly working on bringing more natural voice commands to market with CUE, but Pioneer and its new Zypr voice-to-cloud platform aims to take it a step further.

Utilizing a tethered smartphone or embedded modem, the new system listens and acts on commands based on conversational direction. Say, “Play some music” and Zypr responses with “Which artist?” or “Which source?” Tell the system “I’m in the mood for Thai” and it will list off the nearest restaurants, provide Yelp ratings and allow you to get directions and email the address to your friends. Facebook and Google integration is also part of the package, and since it’s all handled in the cloud, the expansion of sources and options is infinite. And Zypr won’t just be limited to cars.

Pioneer wants the technology to find its way into every consumer electronics device on the market (for obvious licensing reasons), and with Apple’s Siri functionality on the iPhone 4S putting a new emphasis on natural speech recognition, consumers will be demanding similar tech in almost everything they own within the next few years.

Joining the Honda Small Sport EV Concept and the Honda AC-X plug-in hybrid at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show will be the Micro Commuter Concept.

According to Honda the Honda Micro Commuter Concept is:

A micro-sized, futuristic, electric city commuter which will become a highly accessible form of mobility for more people. This vehicle will offer the joy of a new type of communications between people and mobility and an exterior that the owner can enjoy customizing more casually. The collaboration of Honda’s motorcycle and automobile R&D centers made it possible to load the MOTOR COMPO two-wheel EV commuter in this vehicle.

Electric powertrains are by no means new to the automobile industry because Toyota had invented the gasoline electric hybrid back in 1997. And although their functionality has been undoubtedly successful, a new investigation has popped up involving electric powertrains, more specifically with their battery packs.

This new investigation pops up after a Chevrolet Volt battery caught fire three weeks after a side-impact test at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s testing center in Wisconsin. The fire engulfed the car and others surrounding it.

You may be thinking, well, what could’ve caused that and how come it hasn’t happened to other cars such as the Toyota Prius? Well, for starters, the Toyota’s hybrid powertrains have been utilizing a nickel-metal battery. The Chevrolet Volt on the other hand uses a lithium ion battery. That said, the Volt’s incident has forced a team of investigators from the NHTSA to conduct a private and thorough investigation of lithium battery packs in the application of automobiles, which means the Nissan LEAF will too be scrutinized.

“As manufacturers continue to develop vehicles of any kind — electric, gasoline, or diesel — it is critical that they take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of drivers and first responders both during and after a crash,” said the NHTSA in a statement.

However, interestingly enough, the Volt incident wasn’t isolated to the safety crash testing at the NHTSA center as there was another report of a Volt catching fire in a residential garage in Mooresville, NC while charging. A team of NHTSA investigators were sent to look into the cause. However, although these incidents occurred, the NHTSA doesn’t think there’s a greater risk with lithium-ion powered electric vehicles because relatively speaking, there’s an inherent danger with any automobile because of the volatility of their propellants.

“Based on the available data, NHTSA does not believe the Volt or other electric vehicles are at a greater risk of fire than gasoline-powered vehicles. In fact, all vehicles — both electric and gasoline-powered — have some risk of fire in the event of a serious crash.”

GM’s Statement to NHTSA Investigation:

The following statement can be attributed Jim Federico, General Motors chief engineer for electric vehicles:

“First and foremost, I want to make this very clear: the Volt is a safe car.  We are working cooperatively with NHTSA as it completes its investigation.  However, NHTSA has stated that based on available data, there’s no greater risk of fire with a Volt than a traditional gasoline-powered car.

“Safety protocols for electric vehicles are clearly an industry concern. At GM, we have safety protocols to depower the battery of an electric vehicle after a significant crash.

“We are working with other vehicle manufacturers, first responders, tow truck operators, and salvage associations with the goal of implementing industry-wide protocols.”

Refresher: Power for the Ferrari FF comes from a 6.3L V12 engine making 651-hp at 8,000 rpm with a maximum torque of 504 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm with 368 lb-ft available from 1,000 rpm. The engine is mated to Ferrari’s patented 4RM four-wheel-drive system and a 7-speed transaxle dual-clutch F1 gearbox, allowing the Ferrari FF to go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 208 mph. Fuel-economy wise, the Ferrari FF manages a combined 15 mpg.

Nissan announced today that its 2012 Rogue is one of the very first vehicles in its class to offer a Around View Monitor that helps drivers maneuver into parking spaces with more ease Available as a part of the optional Rogue SL Package, the crossovers is the first non-luxury vehicle in the U.S. to offer the Around View Monitor feature.

“More driver’s license tests have probably been failed due to the applicant’s inability to parallel park than any other task,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “It’s anxiety provoking at best, and risks damage to a vehicle and surrounding property at its worst. Around View Monitor now comes to Rogue drivers’ rescue.”

Like in the Infiniti luxury vehicles, the 2012 Nissan Rogue‘s Around View Monitor use four small superwide-angle cameras – mounted on the front, side mirrors and rear of the vehicle – to provide a virtual 360° view of objects around the vehicle, helping the driver maneuver it in tight spots. The system converts image data taken by the four cameras to create and display the virtual image of the vehicle from above – it’s one of the coolest features we’ve come across in Infinitis and BMWs.

As we prepare to head to the west coast for the 2011 LA Auto Show, the Dubai International Auto Show is currently in full force. Bugatti is at the show showing three new special edition models of the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, the fastest most powerful and exclusive (everything Dubai citizens love) drop-top in the world.

“It is Bugatti’s intention to honour the very important Middle East market with this threefold variety and to provide its highly exclusive clientele in the Middle East an insight into how creativity and inspiration can be successfully driven to individualised luxury,” Bugatti said in a statement.

The first of the three special-edition Grand Sport models is a  horizontal color split with a bright yellow body and a underside in visible black carbon, including black-tinted wheels. The car features Bugatti founder Ettore Bugatti’s favorite color. The inside is finished in yellow-colored leather with black stitching and black carbon on the center console. Prices for this model start at 1.58 million euros ($2.15 million USD).

The second model is also a two-tone horizontal color split consisting of visible blue carbon, framed in polished, anodised aluminium. The wheels come in an aluminium polished and Diamond Cut two-tone finish. This Veyron Grand Sport also gets mirror-shine aluminum finish grills and air intakes. The inside features a nice tangerine leather and dark blue Indigo leather or exposed blue carbon fiber door panels, dashboard, steering wheel and console. Prices start at 1.74 million euros ($2.36 million USD).

Last but not least, the third Grand Sport model comes in a new green carbon fiber tone with polished aluminum. The rims, exterior mirrors and even the EB-logo at the rear are finished in polished aluminium. On the inside, this version features green and silver finishes. Prices also start at 1.74 million euros ($2.36 million USD).

Bugatti plans in making a total of 150 units of the Veyron Grand Sport. So far, only 45 have been sold.

Ever since the beginning of time, Lamborghini has been known as the all-wheel-drive, go hard, supercar. In 2009, the company released the new Gallardo with all-wheel-drive, then later created a ‘Balboni’ limited-edition with rear-wheel drive for those that like power sent to the back (along with Balboni, Lambo’s test driver himself).

According to recent reports, Lamborghini will now offer the same to Gallardo Spyder lovers that desire some rear-wheel-drive fun as well.

The Gallardo Spyder is badged as the LP560-4 so we can expect the rear-wheel-drive version to be called LP550-2 Spyder. With that badging we’re guessing that power from the 5.4 liter V10 will be turned down by 10 horses – however, the model should be slightly lighter than the all-wheel-drive drop top.

Lamborghini’s ‘LP550-2′ should also come with a slightly smaller price tag, dropping about $14,000 off the starting price.

At the 2011 LA Auto Show next week, Jaguar will unveil the drop-top version of the XKR-S sports car. The Jaguar XKR-S will be joined by the C-X16 Concept, which will be making its North American debut for the first time.

Power for the Jaguar XKR-S Convertible will come from the same 5.0 liter supercharged V8 engine making 550-hp with a maximum torque of 502 lb-ft of torque. 0 to 60 mph will take around 4.4 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph.

Production of the 2012 BMW 3 Series recently kicked off at the German automaker’s Munich plant. Following the Euro market, the new 3 will be headed to the stateside in February 2012. So, what can you expect when you head to the dealership to order one?

Lucky for you our sources have handed us the BMW 3 Series ordering guide for the 2012 model year.

According to the ordering guide, the 328i and 335i Sedan feature BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and the 8-speed automatic transmission (205) with the 6-speed manual (ZMT) being offered as a no charge option. Compared to the previous generation (E90), the new 3 Series will feature enhanced standard equipment including: 6.5-inch color display with iDrive controller, Bluetooth connectivity, USB/iPod interface, one inch wheel upgrade (17” standard on 328i and 18” standard on 335i), Dynamic Driving Control with ECO PRO Mode, Automatic Start/Stop on all engines and transmissions, Brake Energy Regeneration, Two cup holders in front of the gear lever and two bottle holders in the front doors and finally floor mats will no longer be an option.

The 2012 BMW 3 Series three trim levels including Sport Line, Luxury Line and Modern Line – of course, an M Sport Package will follow. According to the ordering guide, the M Sport Package won’t be available in the United States until July 2012.

The 2012 BMW 328i is powered by a 2.0 liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine making 240-hp at 5,000 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque between 1,250 and 4,800 rpm. That allows 0 to 60 mph to come in just 5.7 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph (155 mph with Sport Line package). Power for the 2012 BMW 335i comes from the same N55 3.0 liter 6-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine making 300-hp at 5,800 rpm with a maximum torque of 300 lb-ft between 1,200 rpm and 5,000 rpm. 0 to 60 mph comes in 5.4 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph (and 155 mph with Sport Line package).

Mistakes, typos and other types of accidents happen when you’re updated a website on a daily basis (believe us, we know the feeling). Something like that happened today over at cadillac.com earlier today when a picture of the 2013 Cadillac XTS, which is scheduled to debut at the 2011 LA Auto Show next week, was accidentally thrown up for a few minutes.

The picture has now been taken down – however, a bunch of media has grabbed a snap shot of the car prior to its LA debut. At LA, GM will also debut the CUE infotainment system in the XTS sedan.

The Cadillac XTS will go on sale early next year and will replace the DTS and STS models.

The 2013 Cadillac XTS will go into production in Oshawa, Ontario in spring 2012.

Honda AC-X Concept

Along with the Honda Small Sports EV Concept, the Japanese automaker will show this four-door AC-X Concept. The Honda AC-X, which stands for Advanced Cruiser-X is described as “a next-generation plug-in hybrid vehicle which offers a more comfortable and enjoyable time in the vehicle during all driving situations, from urban to long-distance driving. With the choices of an ‘engine drive mode’ for more aggressive driving or an ‘automatic drive mode’ for more relaxed driving, the vehicle broadens the joy of mobility.”

The Honda AC-X is a plug-in hybrid sedan powered by a 1.6 liter gasoline engine and a 120kw electric-motor. Together the system puts out a nice 127-hp.

Honda says that the AC-X Concept has a total driving range of 620 miles with fuel-economy coming in at an amazing 260 mpg (we’re not sure which cycle Honda is basing its estimates on).

The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S with a PDK goes from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and 3.9 seconds with the Launch Control function of the optional Sport Chrono Package.
