Volkswagen group and Lamborghini’s key executives have been speculating about the feasibility of the tentatively priced four-door sports sedan Lamborghini Estoque and so it has not yet been signed off on development.

If the car is approved for production, it will take four years until Job 1 would roll off the assembly line, said Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann.

“If it’s a feasible dream but an economic disaster, we cannot propose it,” Winkelmann said in an interview.

The Estoque was unveiled as a concept at the auto show here. Introduction of the Estoque would fundamentally change the way Lamborghini is structured. Winkelmann believes the Estoque would sell about 2,000 units annually, which would double the company’s volume. Currently, Lamborghini’s assembly lines could not handle that increased volume, Winkelmann said.

If built, the car is projected to cost 150,000 euros, about the same price as the Gallardo coupe. Winkelmann believes the Estoque would sell well in Asia, where sedans are preferred to coupes. It would be mildly detuned from the Gallardo to provide more of a daily-driver feel.

Moving into the super-sedan market also would allow Lamborghini to stretch its powertrain development. The Gallardo and Murcielago will keep their respective V-10 and V-12 engines, and the Estoque would initially have a V-10. However, Lamborghini could give the Estoque a diesel or hybrid engine borrowed from other VW Group brands, Winkelmann said
